Expertise:
Mechanisms of toxicity of endogenous (bilirubin) and exogenous (methylmercury; polycyclic hydrocarbons; dioxins; persistent organic pollutants) chemicals, Oxidative stress, disulphide proteome, mitochondrial damage, antioxidants of synthetic and natural (e.g. herbal) origin
Focus:
Understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which endogenous and exogenous (xenobiotic) chemicals cause toxicity, and the mechanisms by which pre-existing pathological conditions such as oxidative stress/infection, dramatically enhance this toxicity
Affiliations:
Distinguished University Professor, Department of Pathology, University of Western Ontario
Academic Supervisor (if Applicable)

Projects
- Early steps in bilirubin-mediated apoptosis in murine hepatoma (hepa 1c1c7) cells are characterized by aryl hydrocarbon-independent oxidative stress and activation of the mitochondrial pathway
- Feasibility of conducting epidemiological studies to assess the health risk of the Walpole Island First Nation Community from exposure to environmental contaminants.
- Excess nitric oxide decreases cytochrome P450 2J4 (CYP2J4) content and P450-dependent arachidonic acid metabolism in lung of rats with acute Pseudomonas pneumonia.
- Biotransformation of 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) in peripheral human lung microsomes
- Pulmonary cytochrome P-450 2J4 is reduced in a rat model of acute Pseudomonas pneumonia.
- Bergamottin, lime juice, and red wine as inhibitors of cytochrome P450 3A4 activity: comparison with grapefruit juice.
- Apoptosis in murine hepatoma hepa 1c1c7 wild-type, C12, and C4 cells mediated by bilirubin
- Acute sodium arsenite treatment induces Cyp2a5 but not Cyp1a1 in the C57Bl/6 mouse in a tissue (kidney) selective manner
- Acute sodium arsenite administration induces pulmonary CYP1A1 mRNA, protein and activity in the rat
- Red wine-cisapride interaction: comparison with grapefruit juice
- Cytochrome P450 metabolites of arachidonic acid but not cyclooxygenase-2 metabolites contribute to the pulmonary vascular hyporeactivity in rats with acute Pseudomonas pneumonia
- Grapefruit-felodipine interaction: effect of unprocessed fruit and probable active ingredients.
